A whole lotta fear

March 27th 2010 11:40
I think I have a "phobia" of sorts....

It relates to losing my son which seems to be heightened in highly populated situations. Today for instance, we went to a fete and there were a fair amount of people present. Trying to manage and monitor a Seeing Eye Dog as well as concentrating on a 2 year old is extremely mentall challenging and taxing.

I think it is ostensibly worse in this particular environment and at this particular age because the child themselves wouldn't know what to do in the event of seperation (I got lost in the Sydney Markets when I was 7 and went straight to the Police and main announcement area).

I don't know if it resonates as much with other parents who can hear and see far better. I feel like a hawk watching my son as it's only a very limited amount of sight that I have to rely on so i tend to make certain all the time I know where he is. Especially since I can't hear him.

Some fairly bad panic attacks have occurred for me, even when we are at home and I am doing something such as making him breakfast while he is watching TV in the living room chair. I check frequently and then on an occasion he has moved and I suddenly go into panic mode..... "Where is he????!!"

I guess I will have to wait and see how we go in future as he becomes more active. But at least he will be more capable of knowing either where to go in such an event (ie locating his parents or someone in authority). I suspect that like most parents though I wish this never to happen and will be doing my utmost to ensure it does not.

I've been fairly insistant that he holds hands with one of us at all times while walking. Even if he does have a harness on. I was actually a bit concerned about the use of a harness although I appreciate it often makes life much easier. My concern essentially boiled down to wondering whether or not the use of the harness without holding hands would teach him that when he had more freedom and wouldn't want to wear the harness (to the point of tantrum) that it would become extremely difficult to keep an eye on him in public places.

Anyway I better head for bed.
Night all.
